Ask "when is the best time to visit Thailand?" and you'll get a different answer depending on where you're going. Thailand's two coasts have different rainy seasons, and festivals can change the feel of a trip completely.

Here's a practical month-by-month guide, written for travellers flying from India.

Thailand's three seasons at a glance

  • Cool season (November to February): dry, sunny, pleasant evenings. Peak season and highest prices.
  • Hot season (March to May): very hot in Bangkok and the north (35°C+), still great at the beach.
  • Rainy or green season (June to October): short heavy showers, lush scenery, lower prices. Seas on the Andaman coast can be rough.

Two coasts, two weather patterns

  • Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Khao Lak): best from November to April. Wettest from May to October.
  • Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao): best from January to August. Wettest from October to December.

So when one coast is wet, the other is usually fine. That's why Thailand works all year.

Month by month

January

Peak season everywhere. Dry, sunny and comfortable. Perfect for Bangkok sightseeing and Andaman beaches. Book early: this is when hotels are fullest.

February

Still excellent and slightly quieter than January. Chinese New Year (late January or February) brings lively celebrations to Bangkok's Chinatown. A great month for honeymoons.

March

Getting hotter, but beaches are at their best: calm, clear water, ideal for snorkelling and the Phi Phi Islands. Good value starts to appear late in the month.

April

The hottest month. Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival (around 13 to 15 April), turns streets into giant water fights. Brilliant fun for groups and families who don't mind getting soaked. Book well ahead for Songkran week.

May

Hot, with the first rains arriving late in the month. Indian summer holidays make it popular for families, and Koh Samui is a smart choice now. See our family guide to Pattaya for kid-friendly ideas.

June

Green season begins. Expect a downpour most afternoons, then sunshine. Hotel rates drop noticeably, especially in Phuket. Gulf islands remain a good bet.

July and August

Mixed weather on the Andaman coast but plenty of sunny spells. The Gulf coast is at its best. Thai school holidays and European summer bring some crowds. Note that Maya Bay usually closes for a recovery period around August and September.

September

Usually the wettest month on the Andaman side and the quietest overall. Lowest prices of the year. Bangkok can still be a good-value city break with indoor attractions and malls.

October

Rains ease through the month. Diwali holidays drive heavy demand from India, so fares rise sharply. Book flights 2 to 3 months ahead if travelling in Diwali week.

November

The start of high season. Fresh, green landscapes and drier days. Loy Krathong, the festival of lights (usually November), sees floating candles on rivers and lakes; Chiang Mai's lantern festival happens around the same time. One of the most beautiful months to visit.

December

Beautiful weather on the Andaman coast; the Gulf islands are still wet early in the month. Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks of the year. Book 3 to 4 months ahead.

Best time for each type of trip

Trip Best months Where to go
Beach holiday November to April Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi
Beach in Indian summer May to August Koh Samui
City and shopping November to February Bangkok
Festivals April, November Bangkok, Chiang Mai
Lowest prices June to September Phuket, Bangkok
Honeymoon December to March Krabi, Phuket, Samui

Is the rainy season worth it?

Often, yes. Rain usually comes in short bursts, the scenery is greener and resorts can cost 30 to 50 percent less. The trade-offs: some boat trips may be cancelled in rough seas, and beaches on the Andaman side can have strong currents. Always follow red-flag warnings.

What about northern Thailand?

Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai follow the main seasonal pattern, but with bigger temperature swings. November to January brings cool mornings (sometimes below 15°C) and clear skies, which is perfect for temples, night bazaars and mountain trips. From February to April, agricultural burning can cause smoky, hazy air, so it's better avoided by travellers with breathing issues. The rainy season turns the mountains lush and green, and waterfalls are at their best.

Planning around Indian holidays

Diwali, Christmas, New Year and the May to June school holidays are the busiest times for Indian travellers. If your dates are flexible, the weeks just before or after these holidays give you the same weather at much lower prices.
