Pattaya has a reputation for nightlife, but there's another side to it that many Indian families love. Just two hours from Bangkok by road, it's packed with water parks, theme parks, gardens, shows and beaches, and it's very affordable.
The key is choosing the right area to stay and the right activities. Here's our family-tested plan.
Why Pattaya works for families
- No domestic flight needed. It's a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport.
- Lots to do in a small area, so transfers are short.
- Family-friendly resorts with big pools and kids' clubs.
- Plenty of Indian restaurants, including pure vegetarian options.
- Great value compared with many beach destinations.
Where to stay with children
Avoid central Pattaya around Walking Street. Instead choose:
- Jomtien Beach: quieter, cleaner and more relaxed, with long sandy stretches and good family hotels.
- Wongamat or Naklua (North Pattaya): upmarket resorts and calm surroundings.
- Na Jomtien or Bang Saray: resort areas south of Pattaya with spacious properties.
Look for hotels with family rooms or connecting rooms, a kids' pool, and Indian breakfast options.
Top family attractions
Coral Island (Koh Larn)
A 30 to 45 minute boat ride from Pattaya. The water is clearer than in the city, and the beaches are great for children. Activities like parasailing, glass-bottom boats and sea walking are available, though always choose operators with proper safety equipment.
Ramayana Water Park
One of the largest water parks in Thailand, with gentle splash areas for little ones and big slides for teenagers and adults. Plan a full day.
Cartoon Network Amazone
A themed water park with slides and play zones featuring popular cartoon characters. A hit with younger children.
Nong Nooch Tropical Garden
Huge, beautifully landscaped gardens with themed sections, cultural shows and elephant performances. Families can easily spend half a day.
Sanctuary of Truth
A remarkable wooden temple-palace carved entirely by hand, right on the sea. Children enjoy the scale and detail, and there are shows and activities on site.
Underwater World Pattaya
A walk-through tunnel aquarium with sharks, rays and turtles. Perfect for a hot afternoon.
Art in Paradise
A 3D illusion art museum where you become part of the paintings. Great for fun family photos.
Shows
Alcazar and Tiffany's are famous cabaret shows that many families attend, but check suitability for younger children first. Nong Nooch's cultural show is a safe, colourful alternative.
A 3-day Pattaya family plan
Day 1: Arrive and settle in
Transfer from Bangkok, check in and enjoy the pool. Evening walk along Jomtien Beach and dinner at an Indian restaurant.
Day 2: Coral Island
Morning boat to Coral Island, beach time and lunch on the island. Return in the afternoon and rest. Evening visit to a night market.
Day 3: Water park or gardens
Choose Ramayana Water Park for an action-packed day, or Nong Nooch Garden and the Sanctuary of Truth for a gentler one.
Combine Pattaya with Bangkok
Most families pair 2 to 3 nights in Pattaya with 2 nights in Bangkok. In Bangkok, children love Safari World, SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World, KidZania and a river cruise. See our full list of things to do in Bangkok.
A classic 5-night family route is 2 nights Pattaya, then 3 nights Bangkok, which is simple, affordable and needs no domestic flights. Want beaches with clearer water? Swap Pattaya for Phuket's Kata or Karon beaches. Our 7-day itinerary shows how.
Getting around Pattaya
Pattaya's blue songthaews (shared pickup trucks) run along Beach Road and Second Road for a small fixed fare, which is fun for older kids but not ideal with toddlers or luggage. Grab cars are widely available and convenient for families. For full-day sightseeing, a private van with driver is the most comfortable choice and often costs less than multiple taxis.
From Bangkok, book a private transfer rather than a bus, especially with children and luggage. The drive takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic.
Tips for travelling with kids in Thailand
- Book private transfers with child seats if needed. Request them in advance.
- Plan around the heat. Do outdoor activities in the morning and rest after lunch.
- Carry a light stroller for malls and markets; many beaches and temples aren't stroller friendly.
- Pack sun protection: hats, rash vests and plenty of sunscreen.
- Drink bottled water and carry snacks the kids know and like.
- Bring a basic medical kit with fever medicine, ORS sachets and plasters.
Food for families
Pattaya has a huge choice of Indian restaurants serving North and South Indian dishes, plus pure vegetarian and Jain options. Thai dishes such as fried rice, pad thai and spring rolls are usually a hit with kids when ordered "not spicy". Our vegetarian food guide has more tips.
Best time to visit
November to February is the most comfortable. March to May is hot but popular during Indian school holidays. Water parks are best in the hotter months. See our month-by-month guide.
