Thailand is the most popular international holiday for Indian travellers, and it's easy to see why. Flights are short, the food has plenty of vegetarian options, hotels are excellent value and there's something for every kind of trip: beaches, nightlife, temples, shopping, island hopping and quiet luxury.
But "Thailand package" can mean almost anything. This guide explains how packages are put together, which routes work best for different travellers and what to check before you pay.
Why Thailand works so well from India
- Short flights. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad all have direct flights to Bangkok, most between 2.5 and 4.5 hours. Many cities also connect directly to Phuket.
- Simple entry. Indian passport holders have had easy entry options for tourism in recent years. Rules change, so read our Thailand visa guide for Indians before booking.
- Great value. Four-star hotels in Thailand often cost what a three-star room does in Europe or Singapore.
- Food that feels familiar. Indian restaurants are everywhere in tourist areas, and Thai cooks are used to vegetarian requests. See our vegetarian food guide.
The most popular Thailand package routes
Bangkok and Pattaya (4 to 5 nights)
The classic first trip. Bangkok gives you temples, river cruises, rooftop bars and shopping; Pattaya, two hours away by road, adds Coral Island, shows and nightlife. Good for families, first-timers and groups on a tighter budget.
Phuket and Krabi (5 to 6 nights)
The beach lover's route. Phuket has the widest choice of resorts and day trips to the Phi Phi Islands, while Krabi is calmer, with dramatic limestone scenery and the Four Islands tour. Not sure which suits you? Read Phuket vs Krabi.
Bangkok, Phuket and Krabi (6 to 8 nights)
The "best of Thailand" route, combining city and islands. It needs one domestic flight (Bangkok to Phuket) and usually a ferry or road transfer to Krabi. We've mapped out a day-by-day version in our 7-day Thailand itinerary.
Koh Samui and Bangkok (5 to 7 nights)
Quieter, more upmarket and very popular with honeymooners. Samui has gorgeous villas, calm bays and easy access to Ang Thong Marine Park. More ideas in our Thailand honeymoon guide.
What a good package should include
A well-built package removes the hassle without locking you into things you don't want. Look for:
- Return flights (or clearly priced "land only" if you're booking your own).
- Hotels with named properties, not "or similar" in vague categories. Ask for the room type too.
- Airport and inter-city transfers, ideally private for families and couples.
- Domestic flights or ferries between cities, with baggage allowance stated.
- A small number of tours that you genuinely want: one island day trip, one city tour, maybe one show.
- Daily breakfast. Most other meals are better enjoyed freely at local restaurants.
- Travel insurance and entry paperwork support.
Be wary of packages stuffed with low-quality "free" tours. They often mean early starts, shopping stops and crowded coaches.
How much does a Thailand package cost from India?
Prices depend on season, hotel category and how early you book. As a rough guide per person, twin sharing, including flights from a metro city:
| Trip style | 5 nights | 7 nights |
|---|---|---|
| Budget (3-star, shared tours) | Rs 45,000 to 60,000 | Rs 60,000 to 80,000 |
| Comfort (4-star, some private transfers) | Rs 65,000 to 90,000 | Rs 85,000 to 1,20,000 |
| Premium (5-star or pool villas, private) | Rs 1,20,000+ | Rs 1,60,000+ |
These are indicative figures at the time of writing, not quotes. For a fuller breakdown of flights, hotels, food and activities, see our Thailand trip cost guide.
When to go
November to February is cool, dry and the busiest. March to May is hot but fine for beaches. June to October is the green season, with lower prices and short tropical showers, though the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) can be rough. Koh Samui follows a different pattern. Our best time to visit Thailand guide covers it month by month.
Tips for booking smarter
- Book flights early for Diwali, Christmas and summer holidays. Fares from India can double in peak weeks.
- Don't cram in too many places. Two bases in 5 nights, three in 7 to 8 nights, is the sweet spot.
- Choose hotel location over star rating. A 4-star on the beach often beats a 5-star 20 minutes inland.
- Ask what's private and what's shared. It makes a big difference with kids or elderly parents.
- Keep one free day. Thailand rewards spontaneity: a cooking class, a spa afternoon or simply the pool.
