Phuket and Krabi sit on opposite sides of the same bay on Thailand's Andaman coast, only a couple of hours apart. Both have turquoise water, limestone islands and great resorts. But they feel very different, and choosing the right one can make or break your holiday.
Here's how they compare.
Quick verdict
- Choose Phuket if you want lots of choice: hotels, restaurants, nightlife, shopping, shows and easy day trips.
- Choose Krabi if you want dramatic scenery, a slower pace and a more natural, laid-back feel.
- Choose both if you have 5 nights or more. They combine beautifully.
Getting there
Phuket has a large international airport with direct flights from several Indian cities, plus frequent connections via Bangkok.
Krabi has a smaller airport, mostly reached via Bangkok, with some direct international routes. Many travellers fly into Phuket and transfer to Krabi by road (about 2.5 hours) or ferry.
Winner: Phuket, for convenience.
Beaches
Phuket has more than 30 beaches along its west coast. Patong is busy and lively; Kata and Karon are family friendly; Kamala, Surin and Nai Harn are quieter and prettier.
Krabi's beaches are fewer but more spectacular. Railay and Phra Nang, reachable only by boat, are framed by towering cliffs. Ao Nang is the main base, with boats leaving to nearby islands every few minutes.
Winner: Krabi, for scenery. Phuket, for variety.
Island hopping
Both are bases for island tours, and some trips (such as the Phi Phi Islands) run from both.
- From Phuket: Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island), Similan Islands (seasonal), Coral Island, Racha Island.
- From Krabi: Four Islands, Hong Islands, Phi Phi, Railay. Boat rides tend to be shorter.
Winner: Tie. Krabi's tours involve less time on the water.
Nightlife and entertainment
Phuket wins easily. Bangla Road in Patong is famous for bars and clubs, and there are big shows like FantaSea and Simon Cabaret, beach clubs, and night markets.
Krabi is quieter. Ao Nang has relaxed bars and restaurants, and there's a weekend night market in Krabi Town, but it's not a party destination.
Winner: Phuket. Planning a party trip? See our group and bachelor trip guide.
Hotels and resorts
Phuket has a huge range, from budget hotels to some of Asia's best luxury resorts and private pool villas.
Krabi has fewer options, but many of them are beautifully set against cliffs and jungle. Railay's beachfront resorts are unforgettable.
Winner: Phuket, for range. Krabi, for setting.
Food
Phuket has a wider choice of international and Indian restaurants, particularly in Patong. Old Phuket Town is known for its unique local cuisine.
Krabi has plenty of good Thai and seafood restaurants in Ao Nang, and enough Indian options for a short stay. Our vegetarian food guide has tips for both.
Winner: Phuket.
Families
Phuket is easier with children: more family resorts with kids' clubs, water parks, aquariums and short transfers. Kata and Karon are especially good.
Krabi suits families who enjoy nature, but boat-only beaches and steps can be harder with small children or elderly parents.
Winner: Phuket.
Couples and honeymooners
Krabi's scenery, quiet evenings and secluded resorts make it hugely romantic. Phuket wins on luxury villa choice and fine dining.
Winner: Krabi for romance, Phuket for luxury. Our Thailand honeymoon guide covers both.
Prices
Phuket has more of everything, including budget options, but popular areas can be pricier. Krabi tends to be slightly cheaper for food and tours.
Winner: Krabi, slightly.
Adventure and activities
Krabi is a paradise for active travellers. Railay is one of the world's best-known rock-climbing destinations, with courses for complete beginners. Kayaking through mangroves and sea caves at Ao Thalane, hiking to the Tiger Cave Temple's 1,260 steps and swimming in the Emerald Pool are all memorable.
Phuket has more organised adventure: ziplining, ATV tours, scuba diving (including trips to the Similan Islands from October to May), surfing in the green season and water parks.
Winner: Krabi for nature-based adventure, Phuket for organised thrills.
Shopping
Phuket has big malls (Central Phuket, Jungceylon), outlet stores and lively night markets such as the Phuket Weekend Market and Chillva. Krabi's shopping is simpler: Ao Nang's beachfront stalls and the Krabi Town weekend market. If shopping matters, plan it around Phuket or Bangkok.
Winner: Phuket.
