Bali and Thailand top almost every Indian traveller's wishlist. Both offer beaches, culture, great food, beautiful resorts and excellent value. So which should you choose?
Here's an honest, side-by-side comparison.
Quick verdict
- Choose Thailand for shorter flights, more variety (cities, islands and nightlife), easier vegetarian food and better options for families and groups.
- Choose Bali for a slower, spiritual, nature-focused trip with rice terraces, waterfalls, cliff-top villas and a strong wellness scene.
1. Flights and travel time
Thailand: Direct flights from most Indian metros to Bangkok in 2.5 to 4.5 hours, plus direct flights to Phuket from some cities.
Bali: Direct flights are available from a few Indian cities, but many routes connect via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok. Expect 6 to 10+ hours door to door.
Winner: Thailand. You lose less holiday time travelling.
2. Entry requirements
Thailand: Visa-exempt entry for Indian tourists has applied in recent years, plus an online arrival card. See our Thailand visa guide.
Bali (Indonesia): Indian travellers have been eligible for a visa on arrival or e-VOA, usually for a fee. Bali has also introduced a tourist levy paid online or on arrival.
Rules change for both, so always check before booking.
Winner: Thailand, slightly simpler.
3. Cost
Both are great value. Thailand's flights are usually cheaper from India. In Bali, private villas with pools are remarkable value, while Thailand offers more budget hotels and cheaper street food.
Typical 6-night trip per person from India, mid-range, including flights:
- Thailand: Rs 70,000 to 1,00,000
- Bali: Rs 80,000 to 1,15,000
See our full Thailand trip cost breakdown.
Winner: Thailand overall, Bali for villas.
4. Beaches
Thailand has some of Asia's most spectacular beaches: turquoise water in Krabi and the Phi Phi Islands, long sandy stretches in Phuket, calm bays in Koh Samui.
Bali's beaches are more varied: surf beaches in Kuta and Uluwatu, calm water in Nusa Dua and Sanur, and dramatic cliff beaches. Day trips to Nusa Penida are stunning.
Winner: Thailand, for classic tropical swimming beaches.
5. Culture and scenery
Bali is deeply spiritual, with Hindu temples, daily offerings, rice terraces in Ubud, volcanoes and waterfalls. It feels distinctive and calm.
Thailand has grand Buddhist temples, royal palaces, floating markets and a fascinating mix of old and modern in Bangkok.
Winner: Bali, for inland scenery and spiritual atmosphere.
6. Food
Thailand is easier for vegetarians and has more Indian restaurants. Thai cuisine is world famous. See our vegetarian food guide.
Bali has excellent cafés, healthy and vegan options, and Indonesian staples like nasi goreng and gado-gado. Indian food is available but less common.
Winner: Thailand, especially for Indian palates.
7. Nightlife
Thailand wins easily, with Bangkok's rooftop bars, Phuket's Bangla Road, Pattaya and Full Moon parties. Bali has stylish beach clubs in Seminyak and Canggu, but fewer late-night options.
Winner: Thailand. See our group and bachelor trip guide.
8. Honeymoon appeal
Both are superb for couples.
- Bali: private pool villas in Ubud's jungle or on Uluwatu's cliffs, floating breakfasts and spa rituals.
- Thailand: island hopping, sunset cruises, beach villas in Krabi, Phuket and Koh Samui.
Winner: Tie. Read our Thailand honeymoon guide for ideas.
9. Families
Thailand has more family-friendly hotels, theme parks, aquariums and short transfers. Bali's traffic can make transfers long, but families love Ubud's monkey forest and Nusa Dua's calm beaches.
Winner: Thailand.
10. Getting around
Thailand has domestic flights, ferries, Skytrain and Grab. Bali relies on roads, and traffic around Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud can be heavy.
Winner: Thailand.
11. Shopping
Thailand is a shopper's dream: giant malls in Bangkok, the huge Chatuchak Weekend Market, night markets everywhere and good-value clothing, cosmetics and electronics.
Bali is better for handicrafts, art, wood carvings, silver jewellery and boutique fashion, especially in Ubud and Seminyak.
Winner: Thailand for variety and value, Bali for unique crafts.
